You might know how industrial farming for the last few decades usually means planting just one crop over and over (monoculture) until the soil is totally dead. This means farmers don't earn enough income and end up malnourished. Trees for the Future is flipping this script.
They use a process called the Forest Garden Approach. Instead of that empty monoculture setup, they train local farmers in 5 countries in Africa over 4 years to plant their land with hundreds (sometimes thousands) of trees, fruits, and veggies growing together in an organized way. It kicks off massive regeneration and reforestation on private farmland, bringing dead soil back to life and keeping rainwater from washing the dirt away.
The payoff for these families is incredible (and the main reason I love what we do). They go from struggling to get by to having an abundance of fresh, nutritious food. Plus, because they have so much extra produce to sell, their average income jumps by about 400% by the time they graduate from the program!
Their kids can go to school long-term, and their adult kids can stay on the farm because there is work now (instead of having to move to the city to find another job to survive).
It’s a total win-win for their health and the planet.

Trees for the Future, as an entire nonprofit organization, accomplished so much. Here are their 2025 numbers:
🌱 They partnered with 31,287 farmers
🌱 They planted more than 34 million trees (!!)
🌱 Farmers restored 20,677 hectares of land
And in 2026, their impact is growing even further: They have partnered with 3,650 new farmers to begin their journey toward restoring land (the 4-year program). They are actively scaling their work around the Lake Victoria Watershed in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, benefiting close to 250,000 family members!
Their work is vital and impressive. I'm grateful to have been part of their effort for the last 6 years. These trees will outlast me!
